Justice Minister Norbert Mao is backing his wife, Beatrice Nambi, in a bid to unseat Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago in the 2026 elections.

Mao, who is also seeking re-election as president of the Democratic Party (DP) at the party’s May 30 delegates conference, has reportedly told party leaders that Nambi will win the mayor’s seat.

Nambi recently confirmed her candidacy to Muslim leaders, stating she is confident of victory despite being disqualified from the 2021 race due to voter registration issues, which she says have since been resolved.

“Now, I am back and I am confident that the Kampala lord mayor seat will be mine come 2026,” Nambi said.

Her campaign posters have appeared at DP mobilization events ahead of the delegates conference. If nominated by the DP, Nambi will face Lukwago and several other candidates, including former Makindye East MP Ibrahim Kasozi, Moses Nsubuga Kizito, Daniel Kazibwe (Ragga Dee), and Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo.

Mao defended the DP’s readiness for the 2026 elections, saying, “DP remains the most democratic political party in Uganda. Our internal organs are functional and disagreements do not equate to chaos.” He also criticized media coverage of the party.

Mao signed a cooperation agreement between the DP and the ruling National Resistance Movement in July 2022.
