People Power spokesman Joel Ssenyonyi has said there is nothing to hide in the talks between Dr Kizza Besigye and Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

Several media reports have reported that Bobi Wine and Dr Besigye’s teams are holding talks regarding how to proceed with the 2021 presidential elections. Bobi Wine has already declared his intention to stand for president come 2021, a move say will lead to split of opposition votes as Dr Besigye is also set to stand.

But speaking in an interview on Monday, October 14, 2019, Mr Ssenyonyi said the talks are not exclusive.

“There is nothing exclusive about the talks between Hon. Kyagulanyi and Dr Besigye. As People Power, we are discussing with everybody interested in change,” he said.

People Power is discussing with everyone who wants change. There’s nothing special about meeting Besigye. We’ve met with Muntu, Mao and Basalirwa. Ugandans have for a very long time desired a united opposition front but nothing has happened. We’re giving unity another attempt. As People Power, we are humble enough to know that we cannot do this on our own and that’s why we believe that everybody interested in change can add value,” Mr Ssenyonyi added.

Asked whether there are tensions between Dr Besigye and Bobi Wine, Mr Ssenyonyi said it is the supporters of the two leaders promoting tensions.

“The supporters of Dr Kizza Besigye see Robert Kyagulanyi as someone who is pulling the rug from under Besigye, they seem him as a threat. Bobi Wine supporters see Besigye as the man standing in their way but they’re both wrong. There should be no fighting. The obstacle is President Museveni, we should be warming up to this government,” he said.

“People Power is a political movement that embraces every Ugandan who envisions a smooth transition of power regardless of where one belongs. As People Power, we can’t cause change alone. We’re humble enough to reach out to anybody who can contribute to bringing change,” he added.
