National Unity Platform Local Government Leaders Boycott Kyankwanzi Meeting with Museveni

In a bold move, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Caucus of Local Government Leaders in Uganda has resolved not to attend the planned meetings with President Museveni at Kyankwanzi, which were organized by the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) and Urban Authorities Association of Uganda (UAAU).

The leaders, including LCV Chairpersons, City and Municipal Mayors, LCIII Chairpersons, and speakers, were scheduled to attend these meetings starting on April 2nd, 2023.

According to the NUP Local Government Caucus Leaders, the NRM government has intentionally and deliberately failed Local Governments to perform or even deliver basic services to the people by starving them financially, administratively, and politically. Instead of addressing these issues, the NRM party has started to divert the attention of the Local Government Leaders by turning ULGA and UAAU into brokers.

It is well known that Kyankwanzi is the fishing ground for the dictator’s regime, where they brainwash leaders. The NUP Caucus of Local Government Leaders believes that the NRM government’s intention is to compromise Local Government leaders to support and endorse President Museveni’s 2026 presidential campaign, just as he did for the case of medical practitioners.

The NUP Local Government Caucus Leaders have held multiple consultative meetings with stakeholders and the top party leadership to have an official party position on the matter and also to provide guidance to their leaders.

After fully weighing the pros and cons of the planned engagements, it was resolved that all NUP Local Government Leaders should not attend such engagements at Kyankwanzi or any other part of the country, either in person or by a representative.

“As the National Unity Platform, we cannot be part of this mockery or even support any action that assists the dictator to further his agenda. Anyone who deviates from that position does it at his/her own risk,” said Dr. Emmanuel, the Mayor of Kawempe Division, who chairs the NUP Caucus of Local Government Leaders, and Hon. Nasif Naija, Speaker Wakiso District, who serves as the Caucus Secretary.

The NUP Caucus of Local Government Leaders believes that the powers and privileges of Local Governments are provided for by law and do not need to be negotiated or knelt for, which is the intention of the planned meetings.

With the dwindling of the country’s economy, the NRM regime cannot do much to serve the people other than finding ways to hold onto power for fully and unlawfully.

The NUP Local Government Caucus Leaders’ bold decision not to attend the Kyankwanzi meeting is a significant move that sends a strong message to the NRM regime.

It shows that the NUP party is committed to upholding democratic principles and standing up against any attempt to undermine local governance. For God and My Country, People Power Our Power.
