State Minister for Internal Affairs Obiga Kania and Deputy Inspector General of Police Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeyi on Thursday, December 05, 2019, faced a hard time before Parliament as MPs demanded answers over police’s failure to conclude investigations into over 50 high profile murders
While appearing before Parliament Defence Committee, Mr Muwanga Kivumbi, the shadow Minister for Internal Affairs, said in the last five years, 50 high profile murders have been committed yet police have never concluded investigations into them. He said in others, suspects have never been committed to court for trial.
He cited the murders of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, former Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga and Muslim leaders.
He listed others as the murder of Sheik Dukhtur Muwayaand Treasvouri Thomas Peterri a Finnish national.
In response, Mr Kania in argued that his ministry is part of the Justice law and order sector (JLOS) under which several organs work through coordinated and integrated activities noting that it was unfair for MPs to target the police force and apportion blame before speaking to all organs of the state.
The committee has resolved to organize a retreat and hear from all the respective organs under the JLOS in order to get a full picture of the situation.
Another high profile murder is that of Former District Police Commander for Buyende Muhammad Kirumira. Kirumira was murdered together with a female friend Restty Nalinya Mbabazi on September 8, 2018 at about 8:00pm in Bulenga, Wakiso. Six months later, the state prosecution had not yet completed the investigations to have the two suspects committed to the High Court for trial.
