The oil companies including Total energies Uganda, China National Offshore Oil company (CNOOC), Petroleum Authority of Uganda and Uganda National Oil company are currently operating on the two projects Tilenga project in Buliisa and Kingfisher in Kikuube district.
The director midstream at Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) Dozith Abeinomugisha on Tuesday during the joint oil and gas world environmental day celebrations in Hoima City, said that plastic waste had reached an alarming level and has infiltrated all corners of the country.
He said that there was a need to promote responsible consumption and production practices of plastics as one way of stopping environmental degredation.
He asked the oil companies to work towards the restoration of biodiversity and protecting vulnerable species affected by plastic pollution.
Benson Chiche, the acting LCV chairperson for Hoima district said that they have been carrying out awareness about the protection of the environment.
Chiche added that it is high time for the people to move away from talking but take action against environmental degredation.
He said that as the oil and gas sector is being exploited in the country, there is a need to invest in other alternative sources of energy that will ensure sustainability and protection of the environment.
Phillip Katahwaire, the Bunyoro kingdom minister for external relations who represented the kingdom prime minister as the chief guest, said that the kingdom was partnering with the oil and gas companies to protect the environment.
Katahwaire asked people to ensure proper disposal of plastic because they don’t rot and they destroy the environment.
He asked the oil companies to mobilize communities to plant trees as one way of protecting the environment.
