Olympics Paris 2024: Champion Chemutai advances to the finals as fastest qualifier in women’s 3000m steeplechase

Olympic champion, Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai on Sunday July 4 finishes first in Heat 1 of the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:10.51. She qualifies for the final on Tuesday with a chance to defend her title in Paris.

All three rounds of the women’s steeplechase have now finished, and its the defending gold medallist who leads all qualifiers with the top time of 9:10.51.

There were huge roars around the Stade de France during heat 3 for Alice Finot (FRA), who has also progressed to Tuesday’s final as the eighth-fastest qualifier (9:14.78).

Chemutai is the Ugandan record holder for the 3000 m steeplechase and 5 kilometres road race.

Peruth Chemutai won the gold medal in the women’s 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, becoming the first Ugandan woman ever to win an Olympic medal.

This ambitious athlete also has Silver medals from the 2023 All-Africa Games in Accra and the 2018 World U20 Championships in Tampere.
