The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has condemned remarks made by the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, during his rally in Soroti City on Saturday November 9, 2024.
The PLU said Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, used the rally as a platform to make derogatory remarks directed at Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the PLU chairman and commander within the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF).
The PLU statement said Kyagulanyi described the people of Teso as “slaves” and suggested that Gen. Kainerugaba was “stupid,” an insult that PLU spokespersons said disrespected the people of Teso and disparaged Gen. Kainerugaba’s military service and leadership.
The organization further emphasized Gen. Kainerugaba’s history of serving Uganda and the African region, citing his efforts in peacekeeping missions in Somalia, DRC, and Northern Uganda.
The PLU condemned the comments as “unpatriotic” and “divisive,” urging Kyagulanyi to refrain from what they characterized as “politics of name-calling” and “idle talk.”
In their statement, PLU called upon Kyagulanyi to apologize publicly to both President Museveni and Gen. Kainerugaba, as well as to Ugandans, for his remarks.
Additionally, the PLU said Gen. Kainerugaba exercised his restraint and composure, describing him as a leader focused on Uganda’s stability and progress.
The PLU urged unity and cautioned against political rhetoric that could undermine Uganda’s achievements in peace and economic stability, while also calling on political leaders to respect ideological differences and avoid resorting to insults.
