Police have picked Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential aspirant Patrick Amuriat and whisked him to Kyambogo Cricket Grounds where he’s expected to be nominated as a candidate for 2021 presidential election.
Amuriat was Tuesday violently picked by police from the party offices in Najjanankumbi where he said he had gone to pick his documents ahead of his nomination.
Amuriat is slated to be nominated at Kyambogo cricket grounds today at midday. However, Amuriat who was not wearing shoes arrived at the venue hours before his nomination.
“I have come here wanting to pick my nomination papers for me to get nominated. Unfortunately this seems to be problematic because all I see is police all over the place and don’t know what to expect. For me I’m here to pick my papers,” Mr Amuriat told journalists at Najjanankumbi before he was violently picked from his car and forced into a waiting police truck that sped off to Kyambogo.
By the time of filing this story, police who have been deployed to FDC offices since yesterday were yet to make a comment.
Security deployment followed remarks by Amuriat that he would move with a procession to the nomination venue today contrary to the police orders.
Last week, Mr Amuriat, who will be nominated alongside other aspirants today, said he would move to the nomination venue at Kyambogo University with all his supporters contrary to the 10 people each aspirant is allowed to take to the venue as directed by Electoral Commission (EC).
However, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango warned that: “Any Presidential Aspirant who mobilizes boda bodas for a procession risks being arrested including those boda boda riders. We have plans to respond proportionately, in the face of violent crime, which may include the use of teargas to disperse the violent groups.”
