The family of Rajiv Ruparelia, son of Ugandan prominent businessman Sudhir Ruparelia, has asked for privacy following his death in an early morning car crash Saturday along the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.
The family announced Sunday that Rajiv Ruparelia, 35, will be cremated in Kampala on Tuesday.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate Ruparelia, the sole occupant of a Nissan GTR, lost control after the vehicle hit concrete barriers at the Busabala flyover traffic lights in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso district. The car overturned and caught fire.
CCTV footage showed the vehicle speeding shortly before the crash, which occurred before 2 a.m. Police said they are investigating the cause of the crash.
Ruparelia was the managing director of the Ruparelia Group of Companies, a privately held conglomerate with interests in hotels and schools. He was the only son of Sudhir Ruparelia and was known for his passion for car racing.
Mourners, including officials and friends, gathered at the Ruparelia residence in Kololo. A vigil will continue until the 2:30 p.m. cremation at the Hindu crematorium in Lugogo, according to a family statement.
The family requested that their privacy “be respected during this tough and trying time.”
