Salary imbalances is forcing teachers out of the profession – Baguma

The Minister of State for Elderly Affairs in the ministry of gender labour and social development Dominic Mafabi Gidudu has expressed concern over the shortage of teachers which has been brought about by poor working conditions.

Uganda National Teacher’s Union has held its 18th Annual General delegates conference amid challenges faced by teachers.

The event presided over by the state minister for elderly affairs Dominic Mafabi Gidudu who expressed concern over the low numbers of teachers which is brought about by their working conditions, forcing many out of the profession. He was however optimistic that these issues will be tackled .

Filbert Baguma the secretary general of the UNATU says the salary imbalances between science and arts teachers has discouraged many teachers forcing them out of the profession.

The minister was however optimistic that the government will increase salaries for all teachers starting with science teachers.

Despite the challenges, He credited the teachers for being innovative, urging them to make use of the parish development model for their personal development.

The Theme for this year’s annual delegates conference is “the teachers we need for the education we want”.

Teachers’ welfare is a continuous process for identifying, evaluating and developing the work performance of teachers, so that the goals and objectives of schools are more effectively achieved, while at the same time benefiting teachers.
