The speaker of parliament Anita Among has tasked the attorney general Kiryowa Kiwanuka to ensure that the reconsidered anti homosexuality bill 2023 be sent to the president by tomorrow.
This means that the president has 60days to assent on the bill or parliament can approve it after the 60 days.
Parliament has this afternoon reconsidered the anti homosexuality bill 2023 and now awaits assent by the president.
Speaking after the passing of the bill informed MPs that no amount of intimidation will make them retract their decision to pass the bill and urged the MPs to remain firm in defending the country’s Morales.
The Speaker of parliament Anita Among has warned men who sexually take advantage of girls and women in order to promote their talents.
Speaker Among raised concern while rewarding the champions of FUFA Women’s League- The Kampala Queens with 33 million shillings and noted that many girls have been denied the chance to fulfill their dreams and live their talents by administrators who want to first sexually harass them.
She urged young girls to be disciplined and avoid fear among themselves which might lead them not to fulfill their dreams.
The leader of opposition Mathias Mpuuga in his remarks urged MPs to understand the bill and be able to speak to the public about it and noted as leaders they owe the country a duty to protect the country’s Morales.
Mpuuga has also assured legislators that the country has enough resources to operate without relying on western countries if only they would deal with corruption.
The third deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama has assured MPs that the government is not in fear of losing any resources and that’s why cabinet ministers have supported the bill.
Parliament has re-passed the Anti Homosexuality Bill 2023 this afternoon under the chair of Speaker Anita Among which was recently returned by President Museveni.
341 MPs voted in favor of the bill where 401 were present and 40MPs on zoom while one MP who is also Budama North East MP Fox Odoi voted against and no abstinence was registered.
However today’s voting number has been far below compared to the 389 MPs who voted in favor of the bill at the first passing in March this year.
The bill aims at banning the acts of Homosexuality in the country by providing stringent punishments that range from paying 5000 currency cents i.e. 100m- to life imprisonment.
