Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has said that the role of human resource capital in the development of nations puts teachers at the forefront of all development strategies and hence the need to recognize that whatever status one posses presently, we have all passed through the hands of a teacher.
While presiding over the National Teachers Day commemorations for Masaka district that was held at Masaka Sports Club in Masaka municipality, the Vice President added that any country’s human resource capacity depends majorly on the quality of teaching, molding and mentoring in which teachers play a key role.
The Vice President underscored that the theme chosen by the teachers to mark their day of “Young teachers; the future of the profession ” is in line with NRM Government’s historical recognition of the role young people play in the socio-economic transformation of society and has put into various programmes for them like, the youth livelihood fund, young venture capital fund, operation wealth creation under established structures from the village to national level.
Ssekandi who contributed 3million Shillings to the teachers’ function, expressed gratitude about the role being played by young teachers in their noble task of educating humanity. He said that many arrangements are underway to further improve the salaries and accommodation across the country.
District Inspector of School Nsambu Gerald, who represented the District Education Officer of Masaka, said that more than 18 schools from Masaka have a direct input from the Vice President in helping them get new buildings, electricity, libraries and this has had a visible impact since even schools from Kyanamukaka that previously had no first grades in primary have top grades given the new incentives to the areas’ schools.
Nsambu added that the Teachers day builds solidarity among the teachers and furthers networking and forges new synergies to urge them to serve better and educate the youth of the country.
He said that government recruitment of teachers reached the ceiling but some teachers have died while others are down with illnesses but the Education Service Commission isn’t deploying new teachers to fill the gaps.
The National Teachers day is celebrated annually on 5th October and has been marked since 1994.
