Team Uganda upbeat as FEASSSA Games set to kick off this week in Rwanda

USSSA team Uganda to FEASSSA Rwanda 2023 games flagged off at NCS headquarters Lugogo

Team Uganda has on Wednesday 16 August flagged off for the 2023 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games that will be held in Uye, Rwanda starting tomorrow Thursday 17th with teams arrival.

The contingent was flagged off by General Secretary Patrick Barnard Ogwel alongside USSSA official who include the president for both federations Mr. Justus Mugisha. The exercise took place at the National Council of Sports headquarters in Lugogo, Kampala.

“It’s always a big honor to play for your nation. I urge all the participants to be disciplined and focused if they want to get good results from the games,” Ogwel said.

Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) President Justus Mugisha was upbeat that Team Uganda will return home with medals across various disciplines as they have done in the recent past.

“We had qualifier tournaments to select participating schools and athletes and I believe these are the best players. There’s no doubt that they will return home with many medals,” Mugisha said.

Team Uganda,  comprises of different schools teams that emerged champions and those finished among the qualification position in this years local USSSA ball games I and II championships.

These include,  Elite High School from Entebbe in swimming,  St Mary’s Kitende in boys football,  basketball and netball,  St Noah Girls Zzana in Girl’s football, basketball and netball,  Buddo SS in basketball,  Kira college Butiiki in rugby,  Amusi in Girl’s football,  Kibuli SS in table tennis and badminton,  Kakungulu Memorial in handball and badminton,  Mbogo mixed in table tennis among others.

Uganda fielded the biggest contingent for the games totaling 1300 persons, comprising of athletes officials.

Uganda will be competing against Kenya, hosts Rwanda and Tanzania in football, netball, handball, volleyball, basketball, rugby, table tennis, badminton, tennis, hockey, swimming, athletics and goal ball.

12 sports disciplines will be competed at the 2022 FEASSSA Games ranging from soccer (boys and girls), volleyball (boys and girls), handball (boys and girls), hockey (boys and girls), netball, rugby, basketball (boys and girls), badminton (boys and girls), table tennis (boys and girls), lawn tennis (boys and girls), swimming (boys and girls), athletics (boys and girls).

In the previous edition held in 2019, Uganda won gold in football (both boys and girls), volleyball (girls), hockey (girls), netball (girls), basketball (boys and girls), badminton (boys and girls), table tennis (girls) and lawn tennis (girls) as well as emerging overall champions the last two editions.

Participating teams are expected to start arriving in Rwanda on Thursday 17 August 2023 as the tournament competitions will kick off on Saturday 19 August 2023.
