The SDG secretariate has revealed that it is set for the Sustainable Development goals National Conference, which is targeting at spreading more of the gospel about the benefit of these goals to the public, as a way of attracting people to be part of it, so that they achieve sustainable development.
After accomplishing the SDG festival in different parts of the country including Mbarara, Jinja, Mubende, Lira, between May and June this year. Senior technical advisor of the sustainable development goals, Doctor Albert Byamugisha has highlighted the success of the SDG festival which has achieved most of the targets that were set before it kicked off.
Dr. Albert Byamugisha has said that the festival was a success because many people took part in the activities and got chance to listen and share experiences which attracted them to be part of the common cause.
Byamugisha added that they are further setting for the 2 days conference from 22 to 23 of June this year, where different stakeholders were invited to find means of how to involve the minority groups that have been left behind and have missed chance to benefit from the SDG goals. These groups include the disabled, women and children, the youth, the elderly, Refugees, the minor people and others.
The 17 SDGs were adopted by all United Nations member countries in 2015, Uganda inclusive, aiming at helping such countries to achieve sustainable development centering at fighting poverty, preserving environment, clean water and sanitation and others.
Unfortunately, Ugandans had not grasped the importance of these SDGs thereby ignoring the concept and staying behind in issues concerning development. The SDG secretariate organized the SDG festival as a way of creating more awareness to the public on how important they are to the people who engage in them. Among the activities during the SDG festivals include, football and netball, tree planting, people’s parliament, to mention but a few.
It is now 8years down the road, ever since the sustainable development goals were adopted by Uganda with an aim of developing peace and prosperity.
These goals include No poverty, zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, gender equality, descent work and economic development among others.
The national SDG conference is expected to be officially opened by the President of Uganda His Excellence Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 22/06/2023 this week, and expected to be closed on Friday this week by the Vice president of Uganda.
