The NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong has emphasized the importance of leadership, which prioritizes the needs and welfare of the people.
“A leader must think for and love the people,” Todwong asserted. “A leader who doesn’t go back to the people isn’t in leadership for the people but for selfish gains.” He further emphasized that the creation of Nwoya as a district was intended to benefit the local population, not its leaders.
SG Todwong made the remarks while speaking during the 53rd birthday celebrations of Mrs. Mary Adokorach, a prominent businesswoman and a dedicated NRM cadre and activist in Nwoya District.
Todwong urged residents to be vigilant in holding their leaders accountable. “If you are led for five years but your life doesn’t change, and yet your leader’s life is improving, it’s time to consider a change in leadership,” he stated, driving home the importance of leadership that delivers tangible results for the people.
During the occasion, Mr. Todwong received hundreds of supporters who defected from the opposition parties, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT). He emphasised that they made the best choice because the NRM is the only reliable and accommodating political party with a clear vision of transforming the lives of Ugandans. He assured them of their equal status within the party, highlighting that the party’s primaries are the true test of leadership potential. He expressed his gratitude to the people of Uganda for placing their trust in President Museveni, affirming that “the future of the NRM is very bright. Align your future with that of the NRM.” he advised.
Mr. Todwong also encouraged leaders to focus on developing their communities and to promote the NRM government programs, which are designed to uplift the masses. “As leaders, if we can foster a love for community development, then we won’t need to admire other areas but will instead improve our own.” he said.
Lt. Gen. Charles Otema, Commander of the Reserve Force in the UPDF, emphasised the need for modernization in agriculture to maximize production. He also called for a united front against corruption, particularly at the local government level.
“Corruption affects service delivery, and it’s the wanainchi that suffer. Report all corrupt officers so that they are dealt with,” Otema urged.
Mary Adokorach, a prominent local figure, addressed the divisive nature of current politics, calling for unity within the NRM. “The politics of intrigue is dividing the party; we need to be united,” she said, thanking Todwong and Gen. Otema for their presence, which she described as significant to both her and the people of Nwoya.
Omara Christopher, the Resident District Commissioner of Nwoya, emphasized the need for ideological training for local leaders, highlighting the challenges posed by some leaders who are frustrating government programs for personal gain. “We must take action against corrupt local government officials to ensure that our community truly benefits from the government’s efforts,” he stressed.
The event attracted leaders across the political divide from within and outside Nwoya district.
