The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in conjunction with Uganda Registration Service Bureau (URSB), Media Council and Pornography Control Committee (PCC) have teamed up to sensitise cinema operators, video halls, video libraries, and distributors of audio-visual works on the existing legal framework.
According to officials at UCC, the workshop will sensitize film stakeholders on the laws and standards governing film classification, exhibition, distribution and intellectual property issues in Uganda.
The workshop is slated for August, Thursday 2019 at the UCC Conference Hall in Bugolobi.
Fr. Simon Lokodo, State Minister of Ethics and Integrity will preside over the event.
URSB says Intellectual Property rights grant the owner of the work exclusive rights to exploit and benefit from their creation.
The most common forms of Intellectual Property include: Copyright, trademarks, patents, utility models, industrial designs and geographical indications.
The UCC and PCC will also discuss the progress in fighting moral degeneration having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) early this year to allow the two bodies corporate and collaborate in early detection of pornography on all communications, prosecution of offenders, training media personnel and provision of educative materials on dangers of pornography.
PCC noted that all aimed at implementing the Anti-Pornography Act.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at UCC headquarters in Bugolobi, the PCC Chairperson, Dr. Annet Kezaabu said the duo would use available infrastructure to detect pornography including digital loggers, film operators, video halls –among others.
On his part, UCC Executive Director Mr. Godfrey Mutabazi admitted that pornography was a big problem to the country, both online and from film operators, which avenues make it accessible to children.
