Unlike AFCON 2017, Ugandan players are ripping big from the just concluded edition in 2019.
The Cranes who reached the last 16 of the competition before bowing out to eventual finalist Senegal, are seeing a host of players land deals at different clubs.
Five of them, including Khalid Aucho, Abdu Lumala, Tadeo Lwanga, Timothy Awany and Allan Kyambadde have already moved to other sides.
Aucho, Lumala, Lwanga and Kyambadde joined different Egyptian clubs while Awany moved to Israel’s Ashdod FC.
The movement has continued on Monday, August 12th, with Cranes captain Hassan Wasswa sealing a deal to join Al-lttihad Jeddah.
Wasswa who deputized Denis Onyango as the team’s vice captain in Egypt, is believed to have secured a one-year contract that will run until August 1st 2020.
The energetic defender has been out of contract for a while ever since leaving Egyptian side Tala’ea El Gaish, towards the end of last year.
He had a stellar tournament, featuring in all four of Uganda’s games at AFCON 2019 Egypt, despite being 31, it would be easy for to secured a move.
According to sources, he flew out of the country on Monday and he is expected to be unveiled at his new club on Tuesday day.
Speaking before departure, Wasswa could not hide his delight to have secured a new club.
“Yes, it is time to work and play club football again, noted Wasswa.
“I am extremely happy to have got a new job, in Saudi Arabia.
“Every time i get a chance to play football, i do it with one heart, Football is my job,” Wasswa said.
Wasswa has featured for 11 different clubs and Al-lttihad will be his 12th.
For the Cranes, the dread-locked center-half has played 76 games and is yet to find the back of the net.
Wasswa’s club career
Wasswa started out with KCCA FC for whom he played just a single season in 2016/07.
He then joined Ethiopian giants St. George where he also played just one season before heading to South Africa and signing for FC Cape Town.
In 2009, he moved over-seas to Turkey, signing for Karabukspor. At Karabuskspor, he was a main-stay in the team, playing 31 of the team’s 36 games whilst scoring one goal.
After his contract was terminated by mutual consent, Wasswa then joined Altay where he featured in the 2010/11 season before moving to Kayseri Ercisspor.
After one year, Wasswa was on the move again, returning to KCCA FC for who he played in the 2012/13 season.
Wasswa’s trend of playing just a single season at a particular club continued and he joined Dong Nai FC of Vietnam and then SC Villa for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons respectively.
In 2015, he joined Al-Shorta and after one season, he was on the move once again, signing for Al Nejmeh.
Once again, he lasted just one season before joining Tala’ea El Gaish
