UGANDA DOUBLE IN CAF AFRICAN SCHOOLS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP CECAFA ZONAL QUALIFIERS

Uganda had a perfect expedition at the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers of the CAF African Schools Championships, bagging top prize in both the boys and girls categories.

St. Mary’s Boarding SS Kitende and Kawempe Muslim SS emerged Winners in the Boys and Girls category respectively on Wednesday at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the girls final Uganda defeated hosts Kenya 2-1. Lindey Weey Atieno gave Kenya an early lead, scoring inside the first minute.

Kawempe however made a comeback and leveled matters to make it 1-1 through Shadia Nabirye at the interval. Shaluwah Butini scored Uganda’s second goal to ensure the team booked a slot at the CAF African Schools Football Championship Continental Finals to be played in April next year.

In the Boys final, Uganda’s Kitende saw off Tanzania 4-2 in a match decided in penalty shootouts after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

In the individual accolades, Simon Wanyama won the top scorer’s Award for boys while Achraf Kyakuwa was the best player.

Kawempe’s Shadia Nabirye and Huda Ayikeru emerged top scorer and best goalkeeper respectively.
The two teams on top of qualifying for the final tournament will receive $100,000 from CAF.

FUFA 1st Vice President Justus Mugisha who also serves as the President of FEASSA attended the Awards ceremony.

The Zonal qualifiers for CECAFA attracted six teams in the boys’ category and five in the girls’ category.
