Uganda mourns deceased artiste Evelyn Lagu

Ugandans across the social and political divide are mourning the passing of Evelyn Nakabira, alias Evelyn Lagu, a singer and actress.

Lagu died on the morning of Monday 18th August 2023 following a long battle kidney and heart complications.
The artiste has been on dialysis after failing to undergo an operation in Turkey recently due to her deteriorating health.

Following the death, several artistes and politicians paid tribute to the deceased.

Douglas Lwanga, a radio and television host, said the deceased fought a good fight.

“Rest in peace, Evelyn Lagu . You fought a good fight. Sleep well,” he tweeted.

Lagu has been promoting her charity concert dubbed “Evelyn Love Charity concert” which was meant to take place at Papaz Spot in Makindye on 28 October 2023, with a view to raise funds for her treatment.

Eddie Kenzo was devastated at her passing. “We took these pictures last Tuesday at the Jam session and I can’t believe your gone dear Evelyn Lagu. You have fought abig battle my sister may your soul rest in peace.”

Nubian Li posted: “You did put up a good fight for dear life. May God grant you everlasting eternal peace Evelyn Lagu”

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among tweeted: “The country has woken up to the devastating news of the passing of Evelyn Nakabira, alias Evelyn Lagu, who was a singer and actress. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family, relatives, friends and the entire entertainment industry during this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace.”

Mityana Municipality MP Zaake Francis said: “After a lengthy battle with kidney complications, it is very absurd that the Lord has taken our beloved artist Evelyn LAGU to rest with the angels. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, relatives and the fanbase.”

Levixone tweeted: “We will always celebrate you Evelyn Lagu as a very strong woman RIP my friend.”
Simon Kaggwa Njala said: “Oh, my Evelyn Lagu is gone. I had committed to help her raise money for treatment. RIP.”

Who is Lagu?

She is singer and a movie actress. Born Evelyn Nakabira in Kalungu, Masaka, on June 1, 1982. Both parents died when I was a child. She never saw her dad. When She was young, she was sent to Mityana to live with her aunt who worked as a midwife and her husband, the late George William Lubega.

She went to Aga Khan, Mityana SS, Pride SS Mityana and finally, St. Peter’s SS Busubizi, where she completed her A’levels in 1999.

Evelyn Lagu is considered one of the finest singers and actresses on the local scene. She has performed with Mustard and Flash bands and sung backup vocals for (the late) Carol Nakimera, Halima Namakula, Ragga Dee, Makoma and most recently, Mampi from Zambia
