Uganda to join world Habitat day celebrations.

The ministry of lands, housing and urban development to be organise the world habitat day celebrations to held on Monday 7th October 2019 at Busia Municipality- Busia district.

The Director for lands, housing and Urban development MR Khayangayanga Dave while addressing the media today Thursday at Media centre insisted on the world day celebrations.

He noted that the guest of honor will be the vice president of Uganda H.E Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi.

This year’s international celebrations will be hosted in Yaonde in Cameroon.

Among the activities to be undertaken to mark the day include a public rally where all members of public are invited to attend, painting and essay competitions for primary and secondary school children, among others.

“We are going to clean up Busia and home improvement campaigns and initiated a number of policies like measuring and intervention geared at implementation of the new Urban Agenda to address the key issues in the different sectors”. Director Dave added.

Uganda will join the rest of the World to commemorate World Habitat day on Monday 7th October 2019 and UN general Assembly resolution of 17th December 1985 set aside the first Monday of October each year.

The day provides countries, communities and all stakeholders in housing sector an opportunity to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic human right to adequate shelter.

The theme for this year’s works Habitat Day is “Frontier Technologies as an innovative Tool to transform waste to wealth.

This year’s theme is relevant to Uganda’s situation as we grapple with challenge of waste management.

At a national level, the challenge of waste management is accelerated by rapid population growth more especially in Urban areas resulting in enormous waste generation.

This year’s theme innovative ways are managing the policy challenges of frontier technologies, closing the technological gaps in order to bridge the technology development divide and deliberate national innovation systems to foster technological progress and make it appropriate.

Other development and initiatives undertaken by ministry are to developed the national housing policy 2016 which provides a frame work for housing development in the country,development of national urban policy 2017 which provides a frame work for managing the urbanization process in the country.

Enacted the condominium property Act 2001 that provide for vertical housing developments and Enacted the physical planing Act 2010 that declared the whole country a planing tea to provide for orderly spatial development.

The ministry has also to develop the landlord tenant bill , developed the national slum upgrading strategy, developed the model rules for residential condominium,developed the national waste management guidelines and among others.

All the stakeholders in the housing band urban development sector and general public have been invited bto attend and participate in the activities to mark the day.
