Despite a spirited start that saw Tonny Lakony’s charges leading 3-0 early in the first set, Rwanda bounced back to edge the frame 25-20 and take the lead.

What started as a good campaign for Uganda at the CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, is now turning into a serious reality check.

The Lady Cranes fell to neighbours Rwanda Saturday afternoon to lose a second straight match in the competition, having lost to Kenya by the same scoreline on Friday.

Despite a spirited start that saw Tonny Lakony’s charges leading 3-0 early in the first set, Rwanda bounced back to edge the frame 25-20 and take the lead.

As was the case against Kenya, the right first pass was hard to come by, and that affected Uganda’s offence.

Rwanda carried the momentum into the second set and relied on Benita Mukandayisenga’s hard strikes to penetrate Uganda’s porous net defence.

Uganda were left with a mountain to climb once Rwanda took the second set 25-17 to establish a 2-0 lead.

There would be no coming back for the Cranes as they failed to get consistent scorers, with opposite Joan Tushemereirwe struggling to find her way past the Rwanda block.

The defeat means Uganda has won two and lost as many in the first four games. They will conclude their Group B business Saturday afternoon when they go up against Burkina Faso.
