Following the increasing attacks to women in the digital space, Uganda media women association (UMWA) has trained women on how to keep safe online to avoid attacks from different people with different intentions.
According to research conducted by Umwa, women under the categories of female politicians are attacked because of their positions being informed in politics, female journalists are attacked online because of their delivering and sourcing of information, and activists that are in defence of the rights especially of women are also attacked online.
The communications and Advocacy officer in UMWA Brenda Namata noted that it is very key to equip women with knowledge and skills of being aware of the violations existing on the online spaces especially social media since cyber bullying and harassment is real.
Brenda added that UMWA wants women to recognise the online violations and to equip them with the measures on how to protect themselves on the online spaces but then also with the technology they use while doing their work.
The Gender specialist for UMWA Cotilda Babirekere expressed concern that women are continuously abused in different angles especially online which called for Umwa’s attention to train them on how to keep safe online.
She sited techniques such as setting strong passwords in their gadgets, making sure they logout their accounts from every computer that they login to, avoid sharing passwords among others, so that they can protect themselves against attacks in the digital spaces.
