The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has deployed heavy machinery at River Katonga site as reconstruction of damaged bridge starts
Some of the deployed machinery include a A long-arm excavator to efficiently clear any leftover debris, perfectly level the hardcore foundation and set it for its next phase of works.
On Friday, the UNRA Acting Director and Director of Roads and Bridges department Eng. Samuel Muhoozi together with a team of experts carried out a technical assessment at the damaged section of Katonga on Kampala- Masaka road which caved in on Thursday evening due to flash flooding of the River.
After the evaluation, Eng. Muhoozi said the reconstruction of the damaged Bridge will start as soon as the water levels subside,
“We have assessed the situation and are now ready to commence restoration works once water levels subside and reinstate the damaged section at Katonga. From today, mobilization of materials will start.” Eng. Samuel Muhoozi said on Friday.
The Roads Authority also identified other gravel roads in the Central region for emergency works to restore connectivity including; Kyabakuza—Mateete road along Kyogya Swamp and Villamaria- Kabulasoke road located upstream of the Katonga River before it connects to Kampala-Masaka road.
The UNRA spokesperson Mr. Allan Ssempebwa has continued to advise motorists using the alternative route of, Mpigi-Kanoni-Sembabule-VillaMaria-Masaka road to be mindful of other road users & drive cautiously.
“It’s a recently paved road, and many drivers may not be familiar with its design features & surroundings.” Allan Ssempebwa said
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is an agency of Government, under the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) established by law, the UNRA Act of 2006, with the responsibility of maintaining, managing and developing the National Road network.
In addition, the Authority is required to render advisory services to Government and for related matters concerning National Roads, among others.
The Directorate of Roads and Bridges is responsible for the implementation of the national roads and bridges development programs.
These are capital projects which include construction of new roads and bridges, upgrading of existing roads to higher standards, reconstruction or heavy rehabilitation of the paved roads that have served their lifetime.
The projects are implemented in accordance with the designs and the terms and conditions of contracts.
