The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced plans to open up a section of River Katonga Bridge along Kampala- Masaka Highway to light vehicles this week.
Through their Official Twitter account, UNRA on Saturday 27th announced that by early this, a renovated section on the bridge will be opened to light traffic
“Everyone is working hard, and we are excited to announce that the section will be open to light traffic by early next week!” UNRA tweeted
Light traffic allowed to use the renovated section will be announced by Authorities, however, it might not be limited Taxis, private cars among others.
Heavy Cargo vehicles will continue using the alternative route of Mpigi- Kanoni- Kabulasoke-Maddu- Ssembabule-Masaka as UNRA continues to fix the damaged bridge for permanent use.
On May 28, 2023, the Uganda Police and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) advised motorists and pedestrians using Kampala-Masaka highway to use an alternative route of Mpigi-Kanoni- Maddu- Ssembabule- Masaka, & vice versa which is approximately 210km following the abrupt flooding of River Katonga which crosses the highway.
Last week, the Uganda National Roads Authority set up a temporary pedestrian bridge at River Katonga to ensure safe passage for pilgrims.
