United States citizens have been urged to reconsider travel to Uganda due to crime, terrorism and the newly accented to anti- LGBTQI legislation.
According to their latest travel advisory, the Act that came into being in May criminalizes homosexuality raises a risk that Lesbians, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and queer persons or perceived to be could be prosecuted and subjected to life imprisonment or death based on provisions in the law.
They therefore advise citizens who intend to travel to the country to keep a low profile and be mindful that any public identification with the LGBTQI community as a member or a supporter could be grounds for prosecution.
The passing of the anti-gay law has been a point of controversy with calls from the international community to rescind the law and threats of cutting aid by different donors over what they termed as harsh and a violation of people’s right.
President Yoweri Museveni said in his latest State of the Nation address last week that the law was passed after thorough consultations with scientists over whether there is a genetic predisposition to homosexual behavior and they found none.
He however clarified that no one will be denied healthcare on the basis of their sexual orientation as this was being fronted as one of the key fears by gay rights activists.
Meanwhile, the United States has four travel advisory levels to its citizens including exercising normal precautions, exercising increased caution, reconsidering travel and the fourth and final being complete travel ban.
