The USSSA Kampala Region Qualifiers climaxed in Thursday 13 April 2023 at Mengo Senior School with Kibuli SS, Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga, Nabusunsa Girls and Kakungulu Memorial were all winners of the day as they lifted trophies from Football boys, Football girls, Basketball girls and Hockey boys respectively.
To grab the title off defending champions Kawempe Muslim, Kibuli first defeated the latter in semifinal at Uganda Martyrs Lubaga ground via spot kicks 5-4 before beating Uganda Martyrs on final 2-0 at Mengo Senior School.
Max man Kimera Kenneth and Davis Busuulwa were on target as Kibuli SS beating Martyrs 2-0 on final.
Despite losing final for boys, Martyrs walked home with a gold medal in girls football, they avenged against Kawempe Muslim SS the side that beat them last year at Old Kampala to rule Kampala region.
Through Cathrine Nagadya penalty in the first stanza of the game won the day for Martyrs and crowned the champions of Kampala Region.
The two, Uganda Martyrs Lubaga and Kawempe Muslim SS will represent Kampala Region in the national finals to be held in Mbarara next month.
In boys football, Kampala will be represented by five schools, that’s Kibuli SS (Champions), Uganda Martyrs Lubaga, Kawempe Muslim SS, Old Kampala and Mengo Senior School.
Mengo is returning to nationals after a number of years of featuring, the side beat Buziga Islamic 2-1 in the 5th place classification game.
In other disciplines, Kibuli SS crowned the Champions in Boys basketball, Nabisunsa Girls came as winners of girls basketball, Kakungulu Memorial took the Hockey title.
Abbey Ssentongo, the Organizing Secretary in the Kampala Region, revealed that the tournament climaxed well and it was a success but lamented that the turn up wasn’t good compared to the number of schools that are in Kampala.
“We climaxed our Qualifiers that started in February, I can say that the tournament was a success and we thank all the schools that have attended but I can say, the turn up wasn’t good, Kampala has over 500 schools but we registered very few and we are going to continue encouraging schools to take part in the sports.”
Kampala region is one of the nineteen regions the make up USSSA with a big representation in finals.
