Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has expressed concern over the eviction of people in wetlands without being compensated or even relocated.

This comes at a time when many Ugandans are going through a lot of pain seeing their houses being demolished and left homeless without knowing where to start from.

According to NEMA, the campaign to evict people who settled from the wetlands is going on and warned people who are still occupying such spaces to leave.

Addressing the press at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Fdc spokesperson John Kikonyogo stressed that the party does not support people to occupy wetlands but the government would have made proper plans to relocate these people and compensate them so that they can survive after eviction.

Kikonyogo noted that the evictions must be done in an acceptable manner and the eviction process should involve government planning so that these people are handled fairly. He expressed dissatisfaction over the way forests are being destroyed in the country and NEMA for looking on as people settled in wetlands without stopping them and then come out now to evict them.

Fdc proposed that the government should suspend the eviction process and make meaningful plans for the people in such spaces to avoid making people cry every now and then, the party demands for a balanced approach that considers both environment conservation and the lives of the affected people, it proposes exploring of alternative solutions that allows sustainable co existence, it advocates for meaningful community engagement among other issues.

However, the party is continuing with it’s moblisation campaign through holding rallies in the different parts of the country. After registering a success during the Teso Soroti rally, the party is to hold another rally in Mbale next Saturday
