Church of Uganda Diocesan Chancellors retreat on Canon Law kicks off in Lweza

Chancellors and Deputy Chancellors of the 39 Dioceses of the Church of Uganda have today begun their three days retreat on Canon Law at Lweza Training and Conference Center.

While officially opening the retreat this morning, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu commended the Chancellors for their dedicated probono legal service to the Church.

He noted that Chancellors play a crucial role in ensuring that the Church is governed in accordance with the laws of the Church of Uganda under the Provincial Constitution and Provincial Canons and abide by the laws of Uganda.

According to Mr. Nabboth Muhairwe, the Provincial Chancellor, the retreat is meant to strengthen governance of the Church and provide an opportunity for Diocesan Chancellors to network and share experiences from different Dioceses.

“In this retreat, we have invited experts of Canon Law to help us have a deeper understanding of Canon Law and other Church Laws. It will also help us create valuable networks amongst ourselves and orient new Chancellors on their roles and responsibilities.” Mr. Muhairwe said.

The lead facilitator of the retreat is Rev. Canon. Dr. Phil Ashey, the President of the American Anglican Council, one of the founding bodies of the Anglican Church in North America.

Canon Ashey is a former prosecutor and criminal law practitioner in California, USA. He helped draft the constitution and canons of the Anglican Church of North America(ACNA) in 2008-2009 and continues to lead the ACNA Committee for Governance.
