Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi passes on at 98

Tanzanians have been thrown into mourning again following the death of former Tanzania President Ali Hassan Mwinyi.

President Samia Suluhu announced on Thursday February 29th 2024 evening, just 19 days after the death of former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa.

President Suluhu said Mwinyi died in hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was receiving treatment for lung cancer. He had been receiving treatment since November.

“On behalf of the government, I would like to convey my condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians for this loss,” President Suluhu said.

Mwinyi aged 98, was the second President of Tanzania between 1985 and 1995.

He was early this month hospitalised for a chest illness.

Ndugu wananchi, kwa majonzi makubwa nasikitika kutangaza kifo cha Rais Mstaafu wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania, Mheshimiwa Ali Hassan Mwinyi, ambaye amefariki dunia leo Alhamisi tarehe 29 Februari mwaka 2024 saa 11:30 jioni, katika Hospitali ya Kumbukumbu ya Emilio Mzena, Dar es Salaam, alipokuwa akipatiwa matibabu ya ugonjwa wa Saratani ya Mapafu.

Kwa niaba ya Serikali ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania, ninatoa pole kwa familia, ndugu, jamaa, marafiki na Watanzania wote kwa msiba huu mkubwa kwa Taifa letu. Nchi yetu itakuwa katika kipindi cha siku saba za maombolezo, ambapo bendera zitapepea nusu mlingoti kuanzia kesho Machi 1, 2024.
