Uganda Revenue Authority dismissed allegations that they have plans of taxing the Buganda Kingdom Luwalo Lwange project in which Buganda people contribute towards their kingdom development.

This was revealed by the Buganda Premier Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga in his message to the people of Buganda during the function that closed the Luwalo Lwange project in December 2023.

The Katikkiro noted that the kingdom received reports indicating that URA plans to tax the money that the kingdom receives through luwalo Lwange project which the Katikkiro said would be unfair and unwelcome since it is not capital but donations and gifts that Buganda people give willingly as a contribution towards the kingdom development.

In response, on Tuesday February 6th 2024, a URA delegation led by the Commissioner General John Musinguzi Rujuki paid a courtesy visit to the Katikkiro and denied the reports of taxing the project saying that, there is no way taxes would be charged on donations and gifts from individuals as URA only taxes businesses.

Speaking to the URA team in Bulange Mengo, Katikkiro Mayiga encouraged people to register their businesses and pay taxes to help in the development of the country.

It should be noted that in 2023, Buganda kingdom collected over 1.5 billion from the Luwalo Lwange project, the money which it uses to develop the kingdom in different projects such as reconstruction of Kasubi Tombs, Kabaka’s education fund, providing health facilities to the people in the kingdom among others.

URA also contributed 5 million shillings to the kingdom.
