UCU Canons beat Power to take 2-1 series lead

UCU Canons took a 2-1 lead in the best of five playoff semi-finals with Betway Power thanks to a 65-58 victory at the MTN Arena on Tuesday night.

The Mukono based side won all the last two of the four quarters to ensure they flip the series having initially lost game one last Wednesday.

UCU started strongly with Chuma Fadhili and Isaiah Arter combining for the first four points of the contest.

Power responded immediately but would lose the opening quarter 13-12 as both sides looked to be off in the shooting aspect.

The second would, however, belong to Power as they took it 18-15 to take a two-point lead into half-time (30-28).

It was then UCU’s turn to win the third and they did it inspired fashion as they restricted Power to just 10 points whilst scoring 19 of their own to enter into the last 10 minutes with a 7 point lead.

In the last quarter, they would hang on to that advantage thanks to fine defending and subsequently win the contest 65-58.

En route to victory, UCU had four players reach double figures in terms of scoring with David Deng, Peter Sifuma and Jerry Kayaga all scoring 12 points while Fahdili managed 11.

For Power, Paul Odong top-scored on the night with 17 points off the bench while Syrus Kiviri and Geoffrey Soro managed 13 and 12 points respectively.

The victory means that UCU are now one win away from reaching the FUBA NBL final while Power are required to win game four in order to force a decisive game five.

In the other game played on Tuesday, Hope Akello registered a double double of 17 points and 15 rebounds as JKL Lady Dolphins defeated KIU Rangers 70-40 to storm the finals in the Women’s division.

This was JKL’s third win over the Rangers and now wait on the winner between the UCU Lady Canons and KCCA Leopards in the other semi-final which is currently tied at 1-1 after two games.
