Atukunda, Auma and Nalukwago will represent Uganda in the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Buddo Senior Secondary School (3×3) girls Basketball team have been accorded a heroic welcome by the school after conquering Africa in the recently concluded championship in Morocco.
The girls (3×3) won the 2023 Africa School’s basketball championship in Casablanca and become the first ever Ugandan team to achieve the historic feat.
The team comprised of Angela Auma, a senior three student, Atukunda Daisy the skipper and Nalukwago Elizabeth, a senior one student.
Buddo duly represented Uganda in both the girls and boys category in the African basketball championship in the 3×3 docket.
The boys fell short of triumph but the girls beat hosts Morocco 33-29 on aggregate over the two legs to clinch the championship.
The youngsters presented the African title to their head master Lawrence Muwonge who in return ensured continued commitment, motivation and support in further engagements.
“On behalf of the entire Buddo SS, I receive this trophy won by our team of basketballers who represented our school and Uganda as country in Morocco in Basketball (3×3). We thank you girls for fighting so hard for loving the game and being committed and not ashaming our school. Thank you for making our country very proud.” Muwonge said while receiving the continental trophy from the triumphant girls team.”Muwonge said while receiving the trophy.
” The whole world was watching you going to take the trophy. This is the first trophy we are receiving in this country. An African trophy. We are happy to make history.” He added.
“We would like to thank USSSA for organizing school sports so excellently and making sure that this trip was a success. I would like to also thank the Ministry of Education for making sure that talents are promoted.”
Conclusively Muwonge encouraged the winning team to continue playing and working hard for more success.
Buddo SS is a hub of multi talents in music, basketball, football, netball, volleyball among others disciplines.
” Investing in sports is part of our targets here in Buddo SS. It is within our mission statement, providing holistic education, year in year out. We not only teach but talent development and discovery is part of our assignment and mission. We shall not reserve any effort as far as promoting talent is concerned.” Muwonge asserted
The 3×3 Champions: Auma Angela, Atukunda Daisy and Elizabeth Nalukwago.
Auma, one of the members of the winning team attributed victory to teamwork.
” We were determined though at first we were a bit nervous because we thought they were going to defeat us. We thereafter overcame that because of teamwork. We stuck together and managed to emerged victorious.” Auma said.
“We won the first game because they underestimated us because we are young and small in size compared to them but in return we used that as an advantage.” Auma added.
The skipper Atukunda echoed team work and lessons learned from the continental showpiece.
” We are too grateful that we are going to compete on the global stage in Brazil. It is too big to us.” Atukunda said.
“We learnt that team work is key. And we need to always respect each other while on the court irrespective of the height.” She added.
Atukunda, Auma and Nalukwago will be representing Uganda in the World Schools Orienteering Championships which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 19th – 27th August.
